Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach designed to address and heal trauma, stress and other psychological difficulties by focusing on physical sensations and bodily experiences. Developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, the central idea behind SE is that traumatic experiences can become trapped or “stuck” in the body, leading to a range of emotional, physical and psychological symptoms.

The approach doesn't necessarily require clients to relive or recount the traumatic events in detail, but rather focuses on creating a safe space for the body to complete the natural self-regulation process that was interrupted during the traumatic experience.

SE is often used in conjunction with other therapeutic modalities, such as Rolfing, and can be applied to a wide range of trauma-related conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, and even chronic pain.

What does an SE session look like?

Individuals are invited to notice and even be curious about difficult body sensations and emotions. Slow and mindful attention to one’s body responses in a safe environment helps bring the individual’s nervous system back into balance. SE promotes a sense of agency and resilience by renegotiating physiological responses to traumatic memories or triggers. It is within this range of resilience that one can learn to notice the cues of the nervous system helping to release excess stored stress. Sessions often involve movement and supportive touch to encourage a feeling of safety.
